Title My Journey with Assistive Technology
Authors Mary Ellen Buning
Abstract This presentation is a reflective narrative about 60 years of gradual exposure to disabling conditions and the use of assistive technology devices to achieve social participation enactment of important life roles. Life events shaped my perception and helped me in my own coping mechanism, adjustment and adaptation and acceptance of impairment and other life changes. My journey, gratefully, included travel with others both able-bodied and those with other forms of impairment due to my decisions to pursue a career in occupational therapy and eventual transitions into parenthood and academia. The circumstances of everyday life with support and encouragement from others create the opportunity to see disability as just a category of diversity rather than a tragedy.
