Title Ideal training Ankle Foot Orthosis (IT-AFO): a novel dynamic AFO with motion feedback

Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of adult disability. 50% of stroke survivors have impaired mobility due to hemiparesis, in which 20% had a drop foot. Ankle foot orthoses (AFO) have been used for ankle alignment, restricting plantar flexion during swing phase to prevent stumbling. This restriction disrupts the rhythm of gait and increases energy consumption. To alleviate this issue, in previous study, hinge AFOs, elastic materials and mechanical features have been applied to allow some dorsiflexion, provide assistive resistance during the loading response on the affected lower limb, thus reducing the energy cost of hemiparetic gait. Nevertheless, with development of assistive technology, it’s still difficult to increase stance phase of the hemiplegic limb. Inspired by physical therapists’ hand-on activities to facilitate dynamic control, we developed a 3D-printing customized dynamic AFO with motion feedback to improve gait pattern and facilitate weight shifting to the affected limb.
